| WHY EHS?... Environment, Health & Safety? |
Is there any need for an institution to care for the health of its employees? Or the protection of environment? Should it take necessary precautions? Normally, it is expected to be a certain "YES" for such questions.
If "YES" is favourable, why are there thousands of occupational disease victims in Turkey and millions of those around the world? Why do people die or why are theY permanently disabled after those occupational accidents? Why are we still talking about the environment problems if our answers are in favoru of a better world?
There may possibly exist three basic points forming the YES opinion of an institution to occupationl safety, occuational health and environment preservation: WORK ETHICS, COSTS & LEGAL REGULATIONS
A significant portion of lives of those employed is actually reserved for working and sleeping. The live s of people belongs to what they do to earn their lives as long as they spend their time with colleagues at workplaces. ETHICS is actually the cornerstone of business life as it is at many other fields of life. The protection of lives of others, the care for their health and environmental sensitivity a are the concrete indicators of business ethics and team work from the point of employers and employees. Business ethics is the most basic requirement for prestige of an employer and the collaboration of himself/herself with his/her workforce.
COSTS are another starting point. The event that an employee lose his/her health permanently/ temporarily or even his/her life or the event of polluting the environment cannot be regarded as single, one-time occurences. They may not be limited to sudden outcomes. The treatment costs, increasing insurance premiums, compensations, loss of prestige, manufacturing losses and problems, productivity losses are all in the context of a snowball... A snowball consisted of direct & indirect costs growing & growing and maybe threatining the existence of workplace somehow.
LEGAL REGULATIONS and obedience to regulatory framework are another starting point for HSE management. It is obligatory to comply with the requirements enforced by the state, assuming that entities and persons are not eager to be in conflict with the state. Otherwise, following an accident, disease case or environmental polluting act at workplace , legal inspections, sues, legal sanctions and even temporary operation shutdowns are vital processes threatining the commercial activities and so the existence of business.
